Just a few minutes' walk from Jimbocho Station, head down to the building's basement to find Sumatra Curry Kyoeido, an established spot that has been serving Sumatra curry in this neighborhood for over 100 years since its founding in 1924. The dark brownish-black roux, crafted by slowly roasting more than 20 spices, offers a distinctive profile characterized by a charcoal-like subtle bitterness balanced with deep richness. The most popular item, the pork curry, has won wide acclaim for the harmony between its tender stewed pork and smooth, light roux. The roux is reportedly prepared in separate pots for each ingredient—pork, beef, chicken, and shrimp—making it a delight to compare varieties like the hearty beef curry with large cuts of meat or the refreshing chicken curry. Every curry comes with corn potage, and table condiments such as fukujinzuke and pickled scallions (rakkyo) provide a lovely accent that softens the bitterness. With red sofas and brick interior evoking a classic retro kissaten coffee shop, the 42 table seats get lively around lunchtime, yet the speedy service—dishes arriving within minutes of ordering—is also well regarded.
