Since its founding in 1982, Tomato has been run by a husband-and-wife team along a street just steps from Ogikubo Station. Its signature is a European-style roux made by layering 36 spices with aromatic vegetables and fond de veau, slowly simmered over long hours. The signature Beef Tongue Curry is renowned for tongue so tender it falls apart with just a spoon, accompanied by a rich roux and layered spice aromas. The Wagyu Beef Java Curry, made with domestic Kuroge Wagyu beef, comes exclusively in dry (spicy), striking a balance where European-style sweetness and a sharp kick of spice rise together. Seasonal vegetable toppings, featuring 10 to 16 varieties that rotate throughout the year, add color and texture, while soy-sauce-marinated onions and homemade fukujinzuke pickles provide a refreshing palate cleanser between bites of the rich sauce. The interior offers just 15 counter and table seats in a quiet setting reminiscent of a classic Western-style eatery with classical music playing, complemented by warm and attentive service from the chef's wife. No reservations are accepted, and the shop closes once sold out. Cash only, so it is best to visit with plenty of time to spare.
