Located a short walk from Shinjuku-gyoemmae Station, Kirimugiya Jinroku is an udon restaurant that upholds three pillars of freshness: cutting noodles to order before boiling them and serving tempura freshly fried. Its signature offering is the oyako ten udon, pairing crisp and aromatic Daisen chicken tempura with a soft-boiled egg tempura whose yolk flows smoothly, with coating the noodles in the runny yolk being the classic way to enjoy it. The dashi broth, brewed from Seto Inland Sea dried sardines (iriko), Hokkaido kelp, and several varieties of dried fish flakes, is praised for its rich depth and sweet finish, pairing perfectly with the thick, firm noodles. Seasonal vegetable tempura such as eggplant, lotus root, and pumpkin is encased in a light, crispy batter that can be enjoyed with salt or dashi. In the evening, the shop can be enjoyed like an izakaya, where patrons have a drink with sake and seasonal small dishes before finishing with udon, occasionally featuring hard-to-find sake labels. The 20-seat interior, including 10 counter seats, is entirely non-smoking and well loved by everyone from solo diners to lunching friends, drawing lines before opening on holidays and during peak hours.
