Just a few minutes' walk from Nihonbashi Station, nestled quietly between office buildings, stands the wooden house of Nihonbashi Tamai, COREDO Muromachi Store. Set in a renovated liquor shop built in the Showa era, the interior preserves remnants of that time, such as high ceilings and wooden beams, wrapping diners in a slightly dim, calm, and retro ambiance. The signature dish is hakomeshi served in a box, where you can choose between fluffy, tender simmered eel (niage), aromatic grilled eel (yakiage), or a combination of both. Guests can enjoy shifting flavor profiles using condiments (yakumi) such as wasabi, sansho pepper, and yuzu, finishing the meal in a popular ochazuke style by pouring over dashi (Japanese soup stock) brewed from roasted eel bones. A full range of anago dishes, including shirayaki (plain grilled), sashimi, and tempura, pairs excellently with carefully selected sake. The attentive staff gladly guides first-time visitors on how to enjoy the meal and when to pour the broth. Fully non-smoking and tranquil, it is ideal for lunch or gatherings with friends.
