Located along Sakura-dori between Tokyo Station and Nihonbashi Station under a red awning, Nihonbashi Nagato is a long-established Japanese confectionery shop founded during the Kyoho era that is handed down as having presented sweets to the Tokugawa shogunate. Its signature kuzu-mochi, despite the name, is crafted from 100% genuine bracken starch (hon-warabiko), winning numerous admirers with its jiggly elasticity, melt-in-the-mouth tenderness, and the refined sweetness of fragrant roasted soybean flour (kinako). The seasonal offerings are endlessly delightful, featuring summer mizu-yokan so soft it cannot even be lifted with a fork, chewy kiri-yokan cut into wooden clapper-shaped batons, and seasonal fine fresh sweets (jo-namagashi) such as nerikiri and kinton. Because no preservatives are used, the sweets have a short shelf life and provide a flavor that can only be obtained directly at the counter. Although the shop is takeout-only, the service is renowned for being pleasantly attentive, providing clear guidance on ice packs and proper storage. Popular items frequently sell out by the afternoon, so a morning visit is recommended for peace of mind.
