Founded in 1947, Suzuya Akamon Store is a long-established western-style restaurant in Osu where the 3rd-generation owner carries on recipes passed down from a chef trained at places such as the Imperial Hotel. Coated in homemade breadcrumbs that are finer than usual and deep-fried right to the edge of browning, the hirekatsu has a reputation for a light, flaky crust that reveals juicy, tender meat with every bite. The rich pork loin katsu with sweet fat and the melting crab cream croquettes are also popular, best enjoyed by switching between a demi-glace sauce and a sesame-infused miso sauce. Set meals include free refills of rice and cabbage, and many diners note that the lunch hirekatsu teishoku can be enjoyed in the ¥1,000 range. The spacious 100-seat restaurant is entirely non-smoking and offers private rooms for 20 to 30 people as well as tatami seating comfortable for families with children, allowing guests to relax in a serene atmosphere imbued with the nostalgic charm of the Showa era.
