Embraced by a Meiji-era stone storehouse and green garden, savor chewy kamaage udon and fine sake curated by a sake sommelier

  • Springy kamaage udon
  • Only two choices: kamaage and zaru
  • Popular tempura with light, crisp batter
  • Sake curated by a sake sommelier
  • Stone storehouse space designed by Kengo Kuma
  • Tatami seating overlooking the garden
  • Great for solo daytime drinking
  • 3-minute walk from Nezu Station

Renovated by architect Kengo Kuma from a Meiji-era stone storehouse, Nezu Kamachiku is an impressive detached house featuring high-ceilinged storehouse spaces and an approach framed by bamboo groves. The menu is refined down to just two varieties: kamaage and zaru. The thick, springy kamaage udon is enjoyed coated in piping hot dashi (Japanese soup stock), while the cold zaru udon highlights a supple chew and the fragrance of wheat, served with suggestions to sequentially add scallions, agedama tempura flakes, shichimi chili powder, and grated ginger. The light, crispy tempura made with shrimp, conger eel, and seasonal vegetables is well regarded, while the dashi-rich rolled tamagoyaki omelet and negi-katsuo (scallions with bonito flakes) make ideal accompaniments to drinks. The owner is a certified sake sommelier offering an array of fine sake, and using the space like an udon bar for daytime drinking is also popular. The entire restaurant is non-smoking and offers tatami seating (zashiki) and horigotatsu (sunken table seating), providing a comfortable atmosphere to relax alone or with family while enjoying views of the lush garden.
