Founded in 1954 and located along the Uchibo Nagisa Line, Umenoya is famous as the birthplace of Takeoka-style ramen, one of Chiba's three major local ramen styles. Using neither seafood nor pork bones, its pitch-black soy sauce broth is made simply by diluting the braised pork chashu cooking liquid with hot water. It has a pronounced, sharp saltiness; while tastes may vary, many say that once you get hooked, it is unforgettable. It is paired with simple, rustic dried noodles resembling instant noodles, and the unusual cooking method of boiling them over charcoal on a shichirin brazier is also a highlight. The thick-cut, melt-in-your-mouth braised pork chashu is the signature topping that draws many visitors, and adding chopped onions as condiments (yakumi) brings sweetness and refreshing contrast to the rich soup. Inside the nostalgic Showa-retro shop, which still features tatami seating (zashiki), veteran local ladies welcome guests warmly, and many find even the regular portion entirely satisfying. No reservations, fully non-smoking, and parking is available further down the alley beside the shop.
