Kanda Brasil is a coffee shop founded in 1972 located down a flight of stairs in an alley in Jimbocho, where warm wood interiors and understated lighting preserve Showa-era coffee shop culture to this day. The signature offering is the Kanda blend, described as "rich, bitter, sweet," brewed cup by cup via paper drip from direct-flame roasted beans for a brew with solid bitterness and deep body. Ideal accompaniments include the smooth, gently tangy homemade unbaked cheesecake, the light baked cheesecake, and the handmade coffee jelly limited to 10 portions per day; the coffee and cake set has a reputation for being affordable. With a separate smoking area system where guests are asked upon arrival whether they prefer smoking or non-smoking and shown to the left or right rooms, the shop is quiet with many guests immersed in reading or working. Counter seats make it easy to spend time alone, making it just right for taking a breather after exploring the bookstore district or having lunch. Roasted coffee beans can also be purchased at the shop.
