Situated along the Mizusawa Udon Street in Shibukawa, Gunma, Osawaya Daiichitenpo highlights glossy, smooth thin noodles. Combining chewiness with a clean throat-feel, the noodles are said to release the sweetness of wheat as you chew, with many describing the texture as somewhere between Sanuki and Inaniwa. In addition to soy sauce dipping sauce, a sweet sesame dipping sauce is also available; opting for the combined serving with in-house milled whole-wheat flat noodles allows you to compare two textures and broths. The set featuring tempura made from whole large maitake mushroom clusters is a signature, and sweet miso oden serves as a wonderful palate cleanser. With 300 seats across large and small halls, the shoe-free Tatami seating (zashiki) allows families with children to relax, accented by eye-catching hand-shaped chairs and paintings connected to Taro Okamoto. Thanks to tablet ordering at each table and efficient guidance, turnover is brisk, making it a convenient lunch stop during sightseeing or driving trips.
