Standing on a corner along Kokutai-doro Avenue just steps from Tenjin-minami Station, Yataro Udon is a long-established Hakata udon shop that has kept its lights on nearly 24 hours a day on weekdays for over half a century. Its golden dashi (Japanese soup stock), blending kombu, dried baby sardines, and grilled flying fish (ago), is celebrated for its clear, refined, and deeply comforting flavor. The lineup features Fukuoka classics such as soft noodles topped with burdock tempura that drinks up the broth, large round fried fishcakes (maruten), and niku goboten with lightly sweetened simmered beef. The oden, with dashi soaked into beef tendon and daikon radish, pairs wonderfully with sake or shochu, and stopping in for a light drink before a finishing bowl has become a well-loved routine. With 17 seats centered around 13 counter seats, the retro Showa-era atmosphere keeps visitors coming steadily, from wrapping up a night of bar-hopping to breakfast before sightseeing.
