Enticing gourmets with its hideaway ambiance in Akasaka-mitsuke, Makidori Shinkobe is a reservation-only yakitori restaurant that grills chicken over firewood flames instead of charcoal. Harnessing the moisture of the brightly burning wood fire inside the kiln hearth, the course features skewers such as Hinai jidori chicken thigh that are crisp and aromatic on the surface while sealing in remarkably succulent juices inside. A succession of creative dishes showing off wood-fired aromatics appears, from wood-grilled toast topped with rich chicken rillettes to melting white liver. Concluding the meal, the wood-grilled chicken soboro rice is popular for its spectacular presentation, where charred wood is boldly placed into the freshly cooked clay pot to wrap the rice in deep, mellow scents. At the chic counter seating just 12, enjoy a blissful experience that stirs all five senses on important anniversaries or special evenings.
