Marked by its traditional machiya-style facade along Hanamikoji Street in Gion, Gion Tokuya is a sweet shop famous for its authentic warabimochi crafted exclusively from domestic bracken starch and wasanbon sugar. The dark, translucent mochi stretches smoothly as you lift it with chopsticks; taste it plain first, and then coat it with black sugar syrup and roasted soybean flour to bring out an even deeper sweetness. As a delightful twist, after finishing the mochi, you can pour the leftover syrup and soybean flour over the remaining crushed ice in the bowl to enjoy an instant shaved ice. Other popular offerings include authentic kuzumochi made from Yoshino kudzu starch and matcha, as well as mochiyaki zenzai, where guests grill square mochi on a tabletop burner before adding it to sweet red bean soup. Illuminated by soft paper-lantern lighting, the Japanese-style interior includes second-floor tatami seating and private horigotatsu rooms, making it an ideal stop during a stroll through Gion or a visit to Yasaka Shrine. The shop takes no reservations and shows thoughtful hospitality, such as lending traditional Japanese umbrellas while guests wait in line.
