In the basement of Tokyo Kotsu Kaikan, Akebono is a small diner with only 11 L-shaped counter seats that continues to draw lines of customers. Founded in 1962 in Sushiya Yokocho, it moved to its current location when Kotsu Kaikan was completed. Its signature katsudon is a classic bowl made with thick-cut pork loin cutlet simmered in a lightly sweetened sauce and soft-boiled egg, and it is well regarded for the balance of the crispy breading, the sweetness of the fat, and the broth-soaked rice that never gets tiring. The premium katsudon, with more cutlet and a side salad, and the tonkatsu set meal with hand-cut cabbage, are also good value considering the price range in the ¥1,000s. During busy times, customers write their order on a whiteboard while waiting in line, a unique style, and the pleasure of receiving a hot bowl right after being seated. In a Showa-era diner atmosphere, with walls seasoned by years of frying oil and rows of autographed signboards, regulars keep returning for the warm greetings from the proprietress and staff.
