Founded in 1975 and just a few minutes' walk from Akihabara Station, Marugo is a long-established tonkatsu restaurant that often has a line forming before opening. Its signature dishes are the thick-cut Premium loin katsu and Premium fillet katsu, which are deliberately fried at low temperature for a long time, resulting in a thick yet tender and juicy texture. Many recommend tasting the sweetness of the fat with salt first, then moving on to sauce. The fried shrimp, made with natural banana shrimp, is also praised for its firm, plump texture that pairs well with the house-made tartar sauce. Pickled shallots and pickled plums on the table serve as palate cleansers, and both rice and cabbage can be refilled once each. A thoughtful touch is the warm jasmine tea served as guests finish their meal. The first floor is centered around counter seating and is entirely non-smoking, making it suitable both for solo diners and for visits with family or friends.
