Quietly nestled in a residential neighborhood between Harajuku and Shibuya, Tamawarai is a soba restaurant offering house-milled noodles made from buckwheat seeds cultivated, harvested, and stone-ground with their husks intact by the owner. The signature coarse-ground seiro is a 100% buckwheat soba celebrated by connoisseurs for its textured mouthfeel and pronounced aroma. Atsumori seiro, featuring freshly boiled thick noodles tossed with raw beaten egg and hot dipping broth, along with dashi-rich tamagoyaki and grilled shrimp marinated in Saikyo miso, are wonderful sobumae accompaniments while sipping sake. Soft lighting and diatomaceous earth walls surround a 14-seat interior centered on counter seating, creating a serene ambiance that makes you forget you are in the heart of the city. Attentive service is also well appreciated, such as the flexibility of ordering tamagoyaki or sobagaki in half portions, and a climate-controlled waiting area. Daytime meals start from the ¥2,000 range, dinner is course only, and payment is cash only.
