A few minutes' walk from Shibuya Station, Raian changes character between day, when light streams in through large glass windows, and night, when the lighting dims for a moody atmosphere. In the open kitchen at the back of the restaurant, craftsmen make soba by hand every day, and the care taken in using different soba flour from different regions each season comes through. Popular since the restaurant opened, the shirasu, uni, and ikura mazesoba, along with duck seiro (available with thin noodles or inaka-style), are the mainstays, and the sobamae menu is also substantial, featuring market-price raw oysters and an Iwachu pork dish fragrant with yuzu kosho. A range of sake tasting sets and glasses of wine are available, and a sommelier is on staff, making it reassuring for evenings when you want to enjoy comparing different drinks. The private rooms for 6 can be combined into two rooms to accommodate up to 12 people, and the entire restaurant is non-smoking. In a calm, adult atmosphere, it can be used for a wide range of occasions, from dates to dinner gatherings.
