Located in Akasaka, close to the exit of Tameike-Sanno Station, Akasaka Tenbaradon Hoshinoya is dedicated solely to tendon. The signature Tenbaradon is a bowl laden with bite-sized tempura of shrimp, squid, baby scallops, maitake mushrooms, shishito peppers, and even a soft-boiled onsen egg; it has an excellent reputation for being easy to polish off to the very last grain of sauce-soaked rice. Ordering the Premium (Jo) grade adds a conger eel tempura large enough to spill over the bowl, offering plenty of visual impact. Miso soup rich with flavorful dashi, as well as complimentary table condiments of pickled burdock with ginger and pickled daikon radish, provide a refreshing finish to the hearty bowl. The owner is said to have trained extensively at famous tendon establishments before going independent, and watching the skillful movements at the frying station across the counter makes waiting enjoyable. Bowls are served quickly after ordering, and the entirely non-smoking counter seats are pleasant for a solo lunch. Because it can get busy with lines around midday, visiting slightly off-peak is also a good option.
